Redefining "Retirement Years"

For many of the 78 million Baby Boomers entering their "retirement years" the thought of settling down is either not appealing or due to the sagging economy, not possible. Service careers offer the ability to make an impact on society by applying skills that have been attained during a traditional career to service at a non-profit organization. More than traditional volunteering, service careers involve active engagement in leadership roles or areas of expertise, and often include monetary compensation. An article at Bloomberg.com, titled Charlie Bolden and the Boomers, Still Flying High, gives Charlie Bolden, who was recently appointed to head NASA, as an example of a Baby Boomer who is following up his first career with an encore career in service. While Charlie Bolden has been very successful in his endeavors, author Rosabeth Moss Kanter highlights the fact that it is the Baby Boomer generation as a whole that has the opportunity to change the world, and that the benefits of serving the community are available to all.
